Small Hydro Potential in India

With shortage of fuel sources taking the centrestage in the problems associated with power sector, investors are increasingly looking forward to exploiting the hydro potential for capacity addition. But capacity addition through Hydro power has its own hurdles of R&R issues, especially in North Eastern region. In this respect, investing in small hydro plants makes more sense. In India, hydro power projects with a station capacity of up to 25 megawatt (MW) each fall under the category of small hydro power (SHP). Such hydro projects are eligible for renewable energy certificates which have a market of their own in India. Here is a quick recap (a bit dated) of the small hydro potential in India.

Potential
India has an estimated SHP potential of about 15 300 MW.

Installed Capacity
The total installed capacity of small hydro power projects (upto 25 MW) as on 31.01.2011 is 2954 MW from 801 projects and 271 projects with aggregate capacity of 915 MW are under construction.
